Forwarding an FYI from Ryan Scott.  Dangerous wood in Lower Zigzag on the Truss!!!!

-----

This just in from River Ranger, Brandon Backman:
There is a new, huge old growth log in the middle of Lower Zig-Zag Rapid on the Green Truss section of the White Salmon River. It sounds like a pretty sketchy line to make it through and a portage around this is near impossible. Approach zig-zag and the Truss, for now, with extreme caution!

Do Not drop into Lower Zig Zag blind right now!

More information posted by Heather Herbeck to PDX Kayaker.  Also check out Ryan's website (http://crgkayaking.blogspot.com).  I know a lot of us were going to head up there this weekend.  Spread the word to those who don't check email often!!!!!  -megi

Relaying this message from the River Ranger, Brandon Backman . . . he
just left me a message with a little more detail. His message was this:

"There is a giant root wad tree hanging in the area of the "fang" rock
in lower zig zag canyon, extending from river left down towards the
middle of the river. There is not enough information at this time as
to whether the tree extends all the way to river right as well. At
this time, the lower zig zag canyon should be considered a portage
until more is scouted on this drop. A slight move - class VI - could
be made on river left, directly alongside the left wall. However, if
the line were to be missed, it could be a very bad situation."

Please be very careful and contact those who run the Truss often, for
updated situations. I'm sure Brandon, or one of the Hood River crew,
will update pdxkayaker. Be safe out there!

Ryan posted about this situation as well:
